We don't over coach
The Pick-Up Soccer concept came after years in the city leagues where coaches are constantly scolding children on how to play the game of soccer. Pick-up soccer is intended to be a fun introduction to the game as the kids learn as they play. They are bright and learn quickly from game play.
Coaches are to be encouragers as they are privileged to see children come together to experience the game of soccer. Many of the children have never played before and telling them what to do constantly as they play is not fun for them or for us.
Ball handling skills are taught in a fun way during warm up exercises. Adults don't over coach so kids can enjoy their time together playing soccer.
What is over coaching?
Saying these things while the kids are playing:
-“pass the ball” We do not do passing drills –children will learn to pass as they see others doing so and realize the advantages.
-“spread out” We give the kids starting positions however the kids will at this age and level usually play in huddles. Kids will understand playing positions as they continue to play.
Do say encouraging words like:
-“great pass” when you see one
-“great kick”
-“nice play”

Simple rules for Pick-Up Soccer
-no off sides
-no handball penalties
-no corner kicks
-no penalty kicks of any kind
-opposing team kicks the ball in on the sideline where the ball goes out of bounds- rather than throwing it in. We want to keep the ball on the ground to avoid injuries
-do not keep score of the game—if the kids do, that’s okay. The goal is learning and fun, not the score.
